Expansion Tanks are necessary for a split solar hot water system as they absorb excess water pressure. As the water pressure rises in the expansion tank, it pushes against the diaphragm and gently compresses the air. The compression of the air cushions the pressure shock and relieves pressure in the system that could otherwise damage the system.
